June 5th - 9th

4 Days Left of School - Hang in There!!!

I would like to take this opportunity  to thank all staff for all you do for our students throughout the year.  The Sem Yeto Staff is what makes the difference for these students.  When I read the following quote I thought about our staff:

"Great teachers will always care more about the people their students will become than the scores on the test they take."- Robert Meehan

The students at Sem Yeto  have expressed over and over again.. "the difference" that Sem Yeto makes for them is that the staff "CARES" and Sem Yeto is like "A FAMILY."  So THANK YOU for bringing your ALL and being so much more than just a teacher  to our students:)

PLEASE READ/Re-read/or FINISH reading Fostering Resilient Learners this summer:)  I was originally planning on collecting the books but have decided to only collect form the teachers NOT returning next year:)

8 Days Left of School - Hang in There!!!

Every time I sit down to read/re-read a Chapter in  Fostering Resilient Learners  I am so AMAZED at how much relevance it has to our students and how IMPORTANT  the work is we ALL do EVERYDAY and how IMPORTANT it  it is WE have an UNDERSTANDING  of the what trauma is and how it hinders LEARNING, MOTIVATION and SUCCESS of all students in the classroom. A huge piece of  CHANGING the GAME for our students is our understanding and reaction to destructive student behaviors. Chapter 10 talks about the idea of  EXPLORING all options. Kristen states that sometimes when dealing with behavioral problems we lock ourselves into one solution by telling students "If you do x, then y will happen." Frustration leads us to going into our DOWNSTAIRS brain.   She says we get so bogged down by what is in front of us we forget to look at alternative possibilities and solutions. -- We need to LOOK for WINDOWS..read chapter 10 for more information!!

PLEASE READ/Re-read/or FINISH reading Fostering Resilient Learners this summer:)  I was originally planning on collecting the books but have decided to only collect form the teachers NOT returning next year:)

                                        LET'S BE GAME CHANGERS
Again I want to thank all the teachers who are truly,  genuinely, authentically thinking outside the box to change "the game" for our students next year.  Please keep planning, brainstorming and bringing ideas my way.  If its good for kids -- WE will do everything we can to make it happen.
MY FAVORITE PART OF LAST WEEK
Last week after lunch I walked into Margene's classroom to talk to her and I ended up participating in Speed Academic Talk with her students.  It was awesome to be one of her students.  Her activity was well structured, students KNEW the routine so it was clear to me they are participate  in Academic Conversations in this format often...

                                        LET'S BE GAME CHANGERS

I confess I watch survivor- Love the competitions and aspire to be on the show one day:) As I was watching Survivor the other night and listening to the contestants talk, I thought about Sem Yeto...(Yes.. I think about our school and students NON STOP).   I thought about how the concept of "Game Changer"  is so applicable to our school!!  Sem Yeto can be the "GAME CHANGER" for  our students.  We can CHANGE the game  that has  proven to be unsuccessful for them..the game they have LOST  over and over again...   Why would they want to try and play a game they have NEVER won?  Lets CHANGE the GAME..really CHANGE  the GAME (not just make it a smaller version of the original game) ...Let's make it a game the students WANT to play.  A game that they can be successful at and eventually win. A FUN yet CHALLENGING GAME. Of course it is NO fun playing an EASY game (boring). Real success is felt when you are challenged and then WIN....This will inspire students to CHANGE the way they play the GAME... I'm so excited and interested in ALL the ideas teachers are bringing my way to make CHANGES for next year.  Thank you to those jumping on board and being creative with how subjects can be taught, how students can earn credits, what clubs we can offer, how we can build PBIS and working together to develop an orientation class...  I appreciate the input very much....WE have A LOT of great stuff already happening at SY ...but we can  BE EVEN BETTER-#GAME CHANGERS

May 1st- May 5th

Every chapter in this book is so relevant to our student body and staff.  I am giving you snip-its of the Chapters... hoping it catches your attention and gets you to read the whole chapter.  If you have not had a chance to read it thoroughly ..please do this summer. It can be  beneficial not only in your professional life  but your  personal life also:)

Chapter 9  in Fostering Resilient Learners -  Names, Labels, and Need for Control..
One Quote.."Fixating on problems may offer validation for how hard our jobs are, but it leaves us short of identifying all our students'--- and our own--- strengths."

What do we control? Do we  control whether the students in our classroom got a good night sleep? Do we control whether they fought with a parent or sibling before school?  Can we "control" how a student responds to a situation?  When students are trying to stay regulated, often without helpful tools, their behavior is not under our control.  WE CAN INFLUENCE the situation dramatically.  We can provide an environment that is safe and predictable.  We can provide a caring, trusting relationship. And this is what trauma- affected students need from us.

Chapter 8 in Fostering Resilient Learners -  The Power of Relationships
Anthony's Story is a tear jerker..please read it:)  Also Pete's Practice on page 110.. Such a simple way to start someone's day off with you.  A simple message of "Good Morning!" is a powerful one for many of us, and it can help set the mood for the day.  Pete talks about the "Power of 7 Seconds" We do not know the stories of what happened to students before coming to school and we can not control what happened but we CAN control our ability to say "Good Morning" or "How are you?" right off the bat.  So our first interaction is a POSITIVE one:)

Week of April 17th - 21st

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

I apologize I did not announce earlier:

Astrid is NOW Sem Yeto's Community Liaison:) She will be at SY@AHS in the mornings until 11:00 serving as campus monitor BUT THEN will be at SY@AHS on Mondays and Wednesdays and  SY@FHS Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11:30- 3:30 serving as Community Liaison.  Astrid has already enthusiastically jumped into the job..getting to know the students and their needs.  She has reached out to teachers and the Community for resources for our students.  I want to WELCOME her to her new position and THANK her for ALL she does for our students and staff!!

PART III - RELATIONSHIPS ARE HARD!!!

Chapter 7 in Fostering Resilient Learners -  If you re short for time PLEASE at least read pages 93-96...Many, Many of you will relate to what is being said...

Kristen speaks of  how many educators  harbor the belief that we must be everything to every student we work with, and that is a daunting proposition indeed.

She further states: That is we can provide consistency, positivity, and integrity in ALL our interactions with our students, well establish a relationship that is safe enough for them.  And if we initiate repair whenever necessary, earnestly working to model and engage in appropriate interpersonal behaviors, we can cultivate an environment that is healthy enough for them. If they know we will be relentless in our support of their endeavors, forgive them the errors they make along the way, and maintain our determination that they will live up to thei potential and our expectations, then the relationship will follow. NOTHING more than that is required.

Week of April 10th - 14th

Chapter 6 in Fostering Resilient Learners - Are you sewing Pillows?  --- If you do not know what this refers to you have not read Chapter 6.

Kristen speaks of how sometimes, our immediate need to make it better for a student overrides our long-term goal of empowering students to problem-solve on their own.  We've got to do our best to stick to this long-term goal, though, and help students build up the resolve and grit that enable them to sew their own pillows.  When we sew for them, we send two POWERFUL, devastating messages: You are incapable on your own and IF you wait long enough and create enough of a fuss, someone will eventually do it for you.  Neither of these messages is healthy or positive, and neither aligns with the greater purpose of our profession.

Fixed/Growth Mindset
Quick Review:

Fixed Mindset = Intelligence, capabilities, and talents are fixed at birth (e.g. "I am not and never will be good at math.")

Growth Mindset = Intelligence, capabilities, and talents can be acquired and lost (e.g. "I have been practicing adding fractions which has helped me to better understand algebra.").

Next Steps: How could you introduce this to students to help them shift towards a Growth Mindset (first three leaders to share some ideas/strategies will receive a prize).

Week April 3rd-7th

What's the BEST thing that happened TO you today?  What's the BEST thing YOU DID today?

WE have posted signs on each classroom door posing these questions.  Please ask your students these questions periodically throughout the day.  AGAIN by asking these questions we are encouraging students to scan  for the positives.  Through conversing  with Laura Thorpe we decided to add the second question because it is ACTIVE versus PASSIVE.  The idea is to get students to not only scan for what positive thing  happened TO them (passive) but to scan for what they DID during the day that was positive (Active).

Chapter 5 in Fostering Resilient Learners - Play Peekaboo..lets all buy stuffed animals... if you are asking "what in the world is she talking about? " --- you have not read Chapter 5.

Kristen makes the point that although we and many of our students do NOT have control over the adversities that affect our lives and our physiologies, we DO possess an element of control over how we RESPOND to our circumstances. One method of harnessing that control is through our breathing.  Deep breathing helps us stay in our upstairs brain.

If you think back to Shawn Achor- Happy Secret to better work /building positive mindset-- one of the five things to do was to mediate- focusing on your breathing:)

The power of breathing--- a resource EVERYONE can tap into at ANYTIME:)

Chapter 3 in Fostering Resilient Learners is so reflective of Sem Yeto.

Kristen Souers, author of Fostering Resilient  Learners, states that the most frequently asked question she receives from educators is "How to navigate the perceived clash between availability  and accountability?   Availability in this sense refers to  our emotional investment our nurturing, and encouragement, and our willingness to engage, empathize, and be there for our students as they maneuver through life's many stressors  and disappointments) while Accountability is insisting that students meet certain standards for their learning, behavior and choices. "Where is the Sweet spot?

As you read further into Chapter 3 ... "WHAT ARE YOUR CEMENT SHOES?"- we will discuss further in the Staff meeting:)

Feb 27th- March 3rd

Several teachers asked me if they can highlight/make notes in their  Fostering Resilient Learners book - ABSOLUTELY!!!

One of my Favorite parts of Foster Resilient Learners is the Reflective Questions at the end of each Chapter.

After you FIRST read the "Julie Scenario" on Page 28, which of the 5 responses towards her behavior did you leans towards?  After you learned Julie's story, did you change your response?

Kristen Souers makes the statement: "There is ONE element in the trauma equation that you CAN control: Yourself...How do you keep yourself in the upstairs brain?

A Message from Ms. Witt

I am very excited about what is happening. Teachers are posting what their students are doing in class AND they encouraging other teachers to join in and get on Twitter and share their class successes as well. Real movement and change occurs when people see the relevance, meaning, and purpose to their work.  When teachers feel the need to get others on board, we are in a GOOD place! The beauty of this sharing is that it is breaking down the walls between our classrooms and opening up the possibilities for teachers to try new and innovative approaches.  It is safe to try and "fail forward."

The reality is that not everyone is on Twitter and therefore teachers are reaching out and sharing other ways to collaborate on ideas, share practices, and encourage each other. One way is the #observeme movement that has been and continues to take place in our district and across the nation. Teachers inviting other teachers into their room with the #observeme sign to observe and provide them with feedback. Yes, they want feedback so that they can improve on their lesson delivery.

Walkthrough Observations

In an effort to provide feedback on the observed levels of DOK, and Academic Conversations (AC) that students are exhibiting in the classroom, the administrative staff will be walking classrooms gathering information that can be shared with the entire staff. We will also be observing what levels of DOK instruction are being exhibited (e.g. what level the objective is written, and what are the levels of the activities students are engaged in). Since we will only be in classrooms for 5-7 minutes, the information we share with you does not reflect the entire lesson taught in any particular classroom. The walkthroughs only provide us a snapshot of what is going on at the time of the walkthrough. This snapshot is still valuable because it does serve as a guideline for taking the appropriate next steps to ensure that we provide opportunities for our students to think and write critically, and eventually exhibit their mastery of concepts in our classroom by being engaged in activities at a DOK level 3 or 4.

If you are interested in participating in these walkthroughs, please let your department chair know; we think this can be a valuable learning tool for our entire staff. Also, please let us know if you would like us to walk through your classroom to observe the really cool activities you have your students engaged in; and that you believe all students can benefit from. The information gathered from this week's walkthroughs are as follows (This is from both sites combined):

11 Classrooms Visited
DOK Levels Observed
Level 1 - 5
Level 2 - 3
Level 3 - 0
Level 4-  0

Academic Conversations Observed -0
Direct instruction - 11

As we move forward with providing this feedback, we will also include the level of the Objectives and the levels of the related student interaction at the time of the walkthroughs (remember it is just a snapshot).

In order for any lesson to have the impact that we as educators desire, we must "Land" the conclusion. The conclusion is that portion of the lesson that puts everything in perspective for the students. It is the part of the lesson where students are able to assess and make connections with and between multiple concepts and skills being taught in the classroom. In the article:The Importance of Debriefing in Learning and What That Might Look Like in the Classroom  (attached below) several strategies are shared to ensure that this vital portion of any lesson is not neglected; and instead, this portion of that lesson is made a part of the routine and culture of the classroom. Enjoy

Prize Question: In a very small paragraph, explain what two strategies would work in your classroom setting (First person to share wins a prize).

FOSTERING RESILIENT LEARNERS

In Chapter one the book talks about ACES - adverse childhood experiences and how ACE's have have a powerful negative effect on students'readiness to learn..  The initial eight ACES include: Substance abuse, Parental separation or divorce, Mental illness, Witnessing Domestic Violence, Suicidal household member, Death of a parent or another loved one, parental incarceration and experience of abuse (psychological, physical, or sexual) or neglect  (emotional or physical).  As you talk to our students, listen to their stories, build relationships... take note on how many ACEs they have encountered.

TOOL KIT

Establishing good communication is the essential component to establishing positive and lasting relationships that improve the lives of all affected by it. Below, I have attached an article that talks about how important it is for teachers to make every effort to communicate effectively with students and their parents. There is also a free PDF Home to-School Connections Guide for download.

Reflection- Before reading the article, please answer these questions for yourself: 1) How often do I communicate (not just attempting to communicate) with the families of my students? 2) Where does communicating with parents/families of my students rank priority wise on my enormous daily  list of  things to do? Enjoy your 3 day weekend, and thanks for all you do!!
Hmmmmm, hmmmmmm GOOD!

February 6th - 10th

Please take a few minutes to watch this video about teamwork....

Teams are so powerful when they work together in a cohesive fashion.  We have so many teachers doing so many GREAT things at Sem Yeto to help build our community and support our students. Please reach out and support one another in these endeavors.  A FEW examples include:   sending pictures of great things to Sarah and Daniel for the yearbook,  supporting the basketball team helping to transport the players and watching their game, working with the PBIS team to making the auctions productive and memorable for students, passing out Tribe bucks, working with leadership to promote collecting cans, selling valentine grahams and other activities they put on,  working with testing coordinators to ensure ALL students take test authentically, sharing information with students that is provided to you via email or in staff meetings, Promoting field trips and guest speakers, providing information about students to Special Ed teachers when requested and  collaborating and creating engaging lessons,  We have a great team of teachers..lets work together to provide the best culture and education possible for our students:)
