One of my Favorite parts of Foster Resilient Learners is the Reflective Questions at the end of each Chapter.
After you FIRST read the "Julie Scenario" on Page 28, which of the 5 responses towards her behavior did you leans towards? After you learned Julie's story, did you change your response?
Kristen Souers makes the statement: "There is ONE element in the trauma equation that you CAN control: Yourself...How do you keep yourself in the upstairs brain?

A Message from Ms. Witt
I am very excited about what is happening. Teachers are posting what their students are doing in class AND they encouraging other teachers to join in and get on Twitter and share their class successes as well. Real movement and change occurs when people see the relevance, meaning, and purpose to their work. When teachers feel the need to get others on board, we are in a GOOD place! The beauty of this sharing is that it is breaking down the walls between our classrooms and opening up the possibilities for teachers to try new and innovative approaches. It is safe to try and "fail forward."
The reality is that not everyone is on Twitter and therefore teachers are reaching out and sharing other ways to collaborate on ideas, share practices, and encourage each other. One way is the #observeme movement that has been and continues to take place in our district and across the nation. Teachers inviting other teachers into their room with the #observeme sign to observe and provide them with feedback. Yes, they want feedback so that they can improve on their lesson delivery.

Walkthrough Observations
In an effort to provide feedback on the observed levels of DOK, and Academic Conversations (AC) that students are exhibiting in the classroom, the administrative staff will be walking classrooms gathering information that can be shared with the entire staff. We will also be observing what levels of DOK instruction are being exhibited (e.g. what level the objective is written, and what are the levels of the activities students are engaged in). Since we will only be in classrooms for 5-7 minutes, the information we share with you does not reflect the entire lesson taught in any particular classroom. The walkthroughs only provide us a snapshot of what is going on at the time of the walkthrough. This snapshot is still valuable because it does serve as a guideline for taking the appropriate next steps to ensure that we provide opportunities for our students to think and write critically, and eventually exhibit their mastery of concepts in our classroom by being engaged in activities at a DOK level 3 or 4.
If you are interested in participating in these walkthroughs, please let your department chair know; we think this can be a valuable learning tool for our entire staff. Also, please let us know if you would like us to walk through your classroom to observe the really cool activities you have your students engaged in; and that you believe all students can benefit from. The information gathered from this week's walkthroughs are as follows (This is from both sites combined):
11 Classrooms Visited
DOK Levels Observed
Level 1 - 5
Level 2 - 3
Level 3 - 0
Level 4- 0
Academic Conversations Observed -0
Direct instruction - 11
As we move forward with providing this feedback, we will also include the level of the Objectives and the levels of the related student interaction at the time of the walkthroughs (remember it is just a snapshot).

Here are some activities that can be utilized to assist us in reaching the desired level of DOK for specific portions of a lesson (these activities can also be found on the handout that was shared in your mailbox....enjoy!)
