Feb 27th- March 3rd

Several teachers asked me if they can highlight/make notes in their  Fostering Resilient Learners book - ABSOLUTELY!!!

One of my Favorite parts of Foster Resilient Learners is the Reflective Questions at the end of each Chapter.

After you FIRST read the "Julie Scenario" on Page 28, which of the 5 responses towards her behavior did you leans towards?  After you learned Julie's story, did you change your response?

Kristen Souers makes the statement: "There is ONE element in the trauma equation that you CAN control: Yourself...How do you keep yourself in the upstairs brain?

A Message from Ms. Witt

I am very excited about what is happening. Teachers are posting what their students are doing in class AND they encouraging other teachers to join in and get on Twitter and share their class successes as well. Real movement and change occurs when people see the relevance, meaning, and purpose to their work.  When teachers feel the need to get others on board, we are in a GOOD place! The beauty of this sharing is that it is breaking down the walls between our classrooms and opening up the possibilities for teachers to try new and innovative approaches.  It is safe to try and "fail forward."

The reality is that not everyone is on Twitter and therefore teachers are reaching out and sharing other ways to collaborate on ideas, share practices, and encourage each other. One way is the #observeme movement that has been and continues to take place in our district and across the nation. Teachers inviting other teachers into their room with the #observeme sign to observe and provide them with feedback. Yes, they want feedback so that they can improve on their lesson delivery.

Walkthrough Observations

In an effort to provide feedback on the observed levels of DOK, and Academic Conversations (AC) that students are exhibiting in the classroom, the administrative staff will be walking classrooms gathering information that can be shared with the entire staff. We will also be observing what levels of DOK instruction are being exhibited (e.g. what level the objective is written, and what are the levels of the activities students are engaged in). Since we will only be in classrooms for 5-7 minutes, the information we share with you does not reflect the entire lesson taught in any particular classroom. The walkthroughs only provide us a snapshot of what is going on at the time of the walkthrough. This snapshot is still valuable because it does serve as a guideline for taking the appropriate next steps to ensure that we provide opportunities for our students to think and write critically, and eventually exhibit their mastery of concepts in our classroom by being engaged in activities at a DOK level 3 or 4.

If you are interested in participating in these walkthroughs, please let your department chair know; we think this can be a valuable learning tool for our entire staff. Also, please let us know if you would like us to walk through your classroom to observe the really cool activities you have your students engaged in; and that you believe all students can benefit from. The information gathered from this week's walkthroughs are as follows (This is from both sites combined):

11 Classrooms Visited
DOK Levels Observed
Level 1 - 5
Level 2 - 3
Level 3 - 0
Level 4-  0

Academic Conversations Observed -0
Direct instruction - 11

As we move forward with providing this feedback, we will also include the level of the Objectives and the levels of the related student interaction at the time of the walkthroughs (remember it is just a snapshot).

TOOL BOX
In order for any lesson to have the impact that we as educators desire, we must "Land" the conclusion. The conclusion is that portion of the lesson that puts everything in perspective for the students. It is the part of the lesson where students are able to assess and make connections with and between multiple concepts and skills being taught in the classroom. In the article:The Importance of Debriefing in Learning and What That Might Look Like in the Classroom  (attached below) several strategies are shared to ensure that this vital portion of any lesson is not neglected; and instead, this portion of that lesson is made a part of the routine and culture of the classroom. Enjoy

Prize Question: In a very small paragraph, explain what two strategies would work in your classroom setting (First person to share wins a prize).

FOSTERING RESILIENT LEARNERS

In Chapter one the book talks about ACES - adverse childhood experiences and how ACE's have have a powerful negative effect on students'readiness to learn..  The initial eight ACES include: Substance abuse, Parental separation or divorce, Mental illness, Witnessing Domestic Violence, Suicidal household member, Death of a parent or another loved one, parental incarceration and experience of abuse (psychological, physical, or sexual) or neglect  (emotional or physical).  As you talk to our students, listen to their stories, build relationships... take note on how many ACEs they have encountered.

TOOL KIT

Establishing good communication is the essential component to establishing positive and lasting relationships that improve the lives of all affected by it. Below, I have attached an article that talks about how important it is for teachers to make every effort to communicate effectively with students and their parents. There is also a free PDF Home to-School Connections Guide for download.

Reflection- Before reading the article, please answer these questions for yourself: 1) How often do I communicate (not just attempting to communicate) with the families of my students? 2) Where does communicating with parents/families of my students rank priority wise on my enormous daily  list of  things to do? Enjoy your 3 day weekend, and thanks for all you do!!
Hmmmmm, hmmmmmm GOOD!

February 6th - 10th

Please take a few minutes to watch this video about teamwork....

Teams are so powerful when they work together in a cohesive fashion.  We have so many teachers doing so many GREAT things at Sem Yeto to help build our community and support our students. Please reach out and support one another in these endeavors.  A FEW examples include:   sending pictures of great things to Sarah and Daniel for the yearbook,  supporting the basketball team helping to transport the players and watching their game, working with the PBIS team to making the auctions productive and memorable for students, passing out Tribe bucks, working with leadership to promote collecting cans, selling valentine grahams and other activities they put on,  working with testing coordinators to ensure ALL students take test authentically, sharing information with students that is provided to you via email or in staff meetings, Promoting field trips and guest speakers, providing information about students to Special Ed teachers when requested and  collaborating and creating engaging lessons,  We have a great team of teachers..lets work together to provide the best culture and education possible for our students:)
